Gen-eer Construction is currently looking for an experienced Estimator to join our TEAM of Professionals. This individual will be based out of our Head Office in Barrie, Ontario.

Role Overview:

Gen-eer is searching for an individual to accept the responsibilities and challenges of an Estimating position reporting directly to the Chief Estimator. The role is for someone who wants to make a positive long-term commitment to the business.

The successful candidate will be focused on getting the best price that will win the contract in a competitive bidding situation, whilst ensuring that the contract can be carried out for a profitable return.

Estimator with 5+ years of experience working in multi-disciplinary construction projects with special preference to Healthcare.

You will manage and lead the preparation of hard tender bids, RFP’s, Design Build and Cost-Plus estimates for projects.

Able to work and communicate effectively (written and oral) within a TEAM environment. Ability to contact and develop business relationships with subcontractors and suppliers for pricing within estimates.

You can manage and coordinate multiple priorities, project deadlines and resources from a variety of sources and locations throughout Canada.

Applies the required knowledge, strategy and skills to handle complex problems and shares expertise with the estimating, RFP, design/build and project teams. Able to develop, make recommendations, review processes, implement procedures, standards, rules and regulations to the estimating department.

Perform complete estimates on selected projects, including the requirement of attending project site visits, quantity take-off, pricing, closing, attending design/build meetings and presentation of the estimate for management and client review.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review Invitation to Tender (ITT) documentation, understand requirements and translate into winning bid strategy.
  • Identify requirement for any additional design consultants and surveys.
  • Preparation of enquiry schedules and liaising with the Chief Estimator in the selection of appropriate companies from whom quotations should be sought. Obtaining sufficient quotations enabling valued commercial judgements at settlement meetings.
  • Detailed analysis of subcontractors’ tender returns, taking account of schedule, methodology, risks and price to ensure recommendation of price.
  • Provide all information necessary to enable the Chief Estimator and Cost Controller to review insurances, bonds and Warranties.
  • Produce analytical rate build up information for Schedule of Quantities / Take-Offs as instructed in an accurate and well detailed format.
  • To identify and analyse “angles” to give a commercial advantage to the tender submissions.
  • To identify and analyse risks and produce a risk register to support the tender.
  • Prepare General Conditions cost estimates in accordance with the Company requirements.
  • To attend the tender settlement meetings and ensuring that all relevant cost information is readily available for presentation and complete the tender as instructed and gain confidence of Senior Leadership Team in presenting quality of cost estimate information
  • All documentation gathered for a successful bid submission to departments concerned that comply with the Company Quality Management System. Communicate to all parties the nature of the work and any special conditions affecting the contract, by the production staff fully understanding how the tender submission was put together.
  • Always maintain regular contact with the Delivery Teams to obtain feedback on cost, technical and commercial performance.
  • Produce high level and detailed cost plans to support work winning activities.
  • Produce and contribute to the written submission of tender opportunities i.e Methodology, Scheduling and commentary to support the submission, procurement strategy etc
  • Record tender outcomes / Feedback to ensure lessons learnt.
  • Procure and negotiate design consultant fees and surveys.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive and effective relationships with clients, partners, supply chain members and post tender project teams.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Must have previous experience in a similar role with a proven track record of preparing tenders in respect of building projects, gained with a General Contractor
  • Hold relevant construction qualifications – HND, Degree level preferred in Quantity Surveying, Estimating or Construction Management.
  • Accurately identifying and forecasting the timescales and resource requirements for projects including Labor, Plant and Materials.
  • Experience of Construction sites and working with Construction Drawings is preferable.
  • Possess reasonably proficient skills in commercial estimating software, Microsoft Project and general computer literacy.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communications skills.
  • A full Driving license is essential.
  • Good time management skills and highly motivated.
  • The ability to work on their own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Experience of working on project values between $100k-$20M
  • Experience of typical procurement routes including Single and Two Stage Tendering, Design & Build, Frameworks and Negotiated Tenders.
