Project Description
At the Farquharson Life Sciences Building, contract consist of renovations of the Ground Floor and Second Floor to construct various laboratories and support space, with works to be sequenced under 2x Phases. On the Petrie Science & Engineering portion of the contract, works include renovations to the Basement to construct various laboratories under 1x Phase of works undertaken in tandem with Farquharson scope.
What we did
Ground floor construction on the Farquharson Building consists of new Teaching Labs, Microscopy, Cold Room and Ancillary spaces. Second floor construction will include Research Labs, Microscopy, Grad Write-Up spaces, Offices and Ancillary spaces. The works on Farquharson will also include sections of Corridor and the Mechanical Room located in the Basement of the building. Farquharson scope of works also includes for the removal and full replacement of the existing windows to the West Elevation on both floors. Renovation works have been sequenced in 2x Phases to provide a completed space on the Second floor with the transfer of an existing Acoustic Chamber to the newly renovated Second Floor prior to commencement of the second phase of works located on the Ground Floor of the building.
Works on the Petrie Science and engineering building involve constructing various laboratories such as the Ballroom Lab with Fumehood, Computer Lab, Civil Equipment room, Laser room, Grad Write-Up room and Washrooms.
Unique Challenges
Construction works in the Farquharson will take place adjacent to occupied spaces throughout the entire construction period. Corridor spaces within the Petrie building will be used continuously by the staff and students.
The project is complex with the teaching spaces still in full-use and close proximity to the construction works together with the coordinated approach being implemented with York University for all Service tie-ins, shutdowns, equipment decant and transfers and noisy works.
Full coordination with York University’s AV, IT and Security contractors will be maintained throughout the construction period to integrate these scopes of work within the contract.
The Outcome
Construction works are currently on-going with an anticipated delivery date of Summer 2021 for the Petrie Science & Engineering Building, and late 2021 for the Farquharson Life Sciences Building.
