Project Description

The project was a multi-phase buildout of a new Interventional Vascular operating room and support department. The medical equipment for the suite was the first installation of its kind in Canada. Interior renovations included for the demolition of two existing OR rooms and service area.

What we did

Critical infrastructure, including sterile corridors, scrub bay, HVAC, and electricity distribution, were fully upgraded. A new Air Handling Unit was installed on the roof to provide the required HVAC systems and Laminar Flow system to the new OR. New electrical systems were installed along with an upgraded medical gas system to support the department. The project also included for upgrades to the structural steel to the existing building to accommodate the new roof top air handling unit and for the medical equipment overhead gantry.

Unique Challenges

Construction of the Interventional Vascular suite within a live hospital environment meant several restrictions were in place for keep the existing department operational and continue with hospital occupation. Concrete coring hours and the impact of Services tie-ins clearly defined and adhered to.

The project was a compact and complex project that was completed within an existing operating hospital environment in multiple high-risk areas (ICU and OR) outside of the main project footprint. The project was multi-phased to allow existing departments to remain active.

Our Mechanical & Electrical trades were carefully selected to ensure healthcare construction knowledge together with a prior knowledge of working at Hamilton General Hospital.

Due to the complexities involved in constructing the design within an aged hospital building, the Gen-eer team identified the high-risk procedures and focused the full project team on communication and positive oriented solutions to ensure the successful completion of the project. We invested a lot of time in the completion of a detailed site survey of existing conditions, identifying all issues together with complete solutions that allowed the project team to amend the design prior to works proceeding, thus mitigating any Cost & Time impact. This collaborative approach with all parties on the project together with workable solutions to problems, fostered an all-inclusive attitude among the full project team that in-turn, guaranteed the delivery of a successful project for the client that we can all be proud of.

The Outcome

Construction of a state-of-the-art Interventional Vascular Operating suite, Scrub and Patient holding bays, Recovery area, Staff base area, Clean / Soiled room, Medication room and Support services.
